My Diabetic Story
I Came from India as a startup founder to Estonia. Corona happened and I had a bump in my business. Looking to explore other opportunities, wanted to get Driving license, went to my family doctor to get my health certificate. Frankly, I thought it was very straightforward. Before leaving my flat, I had this thought in my head: I will fill out whatever forms they give, pay the invoice amount and walk out with the health certificate. As expected, they gave some forms and I filled it as it looked pretty straight forward all easy questions and was pretty simple to answer, so done in 2 minutes. I don’t know why but I was in a little hurry. So asked the nurse, how much and cash or card. Was asked to wait, after few was called to read the Snellen chart. To my surprise could not see the smaller one’s. So obviously I failed. Then came the BMI again failed. Nurse took blood samples, at this point I understood something was not right. I was advised to visit an Ophthalmologists and wait for email reply from doctor in the meantime. Since I was in a rush to get my driving license. I rushed to the Ophthalmologists straight from the family doctor’s place. The whole incident looked funny to me, I was blushing and laughing about getting eyeglasses. I was still very stubborn and naive that at 36 there is no way I will have any health issues.
My interaction with the eye specialist was something like this:
Me; Hey, need glasses to read Snellen chart.
Assistant: Ok do you have blurred vision in general or any other problem with eyes
Me; Generally, when I watch TV I have to stress my eyes to see better to avoid blurry vision. (They got some kind of an autorefractor and was asked to take an eye test. Normally this costs money, and they offered to wave off the fee if I bought the glasses from them. I was happy and did as they told.
